& Minor Requirements
Use the Academic
Planning for Study Abroad form to get courses approved
to meet different major or minor requirements.
- Once you have chosen a program, research course options you are considering. Collect syllabi or course descriptions when possible. Use Finding Courses for assistance.
- Meet with your college, major, or minor advisers to complete the Academic Planning for Study Abroad form. At this meeting, you will discuss the classes you're interested in taking and identify which requirements they may fulfill. Bring the course syllabi or descriptions to the meeting.
- After finalizing classes with your advisers, keep a copy of the Academic Planning for Study Abroad form for yourself and drop off a copy with the Learning Abroad Center.
- Upon returning from study abroad, follow up with your advisers to ensure coursework was applied to your degree requirements.
Study Abroad Major Advising Sheets are available for many degrees. They can guide you to programs that work particularly well for your major.
Liberal Education Requirements
You can fulfill liberal education requirements on most study
abroad programs. The Learning Abroad Center has a Liberal
Education Database of over 2000 courses that have already
been approved for liberal education credit. New courses may
be submitted online for approval. The approval process can
take from three weeks to two months so be sure to plan ahead.
The two year language requirement in CLA can be fulfilled abroad. The Learning Abroad Center programs ensure courses will work. All other programs require approval from your CLA adviser.
Intensive language study is an option on many programs. Review the Intensive Language Advising Sheet to find a program.
Internship, Honors, & Other RequirementsMany of your degree requirements can be fulfilled abroad. The Study Abroad Major Advising Sheet for your degree may outline these considerations.
You also want to check with your academic adviser for your department or college. In those cases be sure to arrive prepared with details about the opportunity that you are requesting fulfill a requirement.
U of M Electronic PortfolioUpon returning from study abroad, follow up with your advisers to apply coursework to your degree requirements. Keep copies of your work. You may even want to use your U of M electronic portfolio to keep track of your work while abroad.
