Access Abroad is a collaborative effort at the University of Minnesota between the Learning Abroad Center and Disability Services to provide information on accessibility at Learning Abroad Center overseas sites. Staff assist students in identifying and obtaining reasonable accommodations and help plan for a successful international experience.
Study abroad can help satisfy liberal education and language requirements, and students often say that their time abroad was the most exciting time of their college career. While study abroad can be challenging, an overseas experience can help you learn more about yourself and your capabilities. In the words of Wendy Harbour, a study abroad student to Japan and University of Minnesota Disability Specialist: "Go for it!"
The Learning Abroad Center has information on accessibility at study abroad sites and offers a wide variety of programs to meet the range of student needs, from as short as three weeks to as long as an academic year. By working with the Learning Abroad Center and Disability Services advisors, you can discuss your accommodation needs and select an appropriate site.
Access Abroad Scholarships
Scholarships are available for study abroad programs through Academic Year 2009-10 for University of Minnesota students with a disability who are registered with Disability Services. Scholarships ranging from $1,000–$3,000 are available for semester, year, May session and summer programs. Details and application procedures are available on the Learning Abroad Center scholarship web page.
"Going abroad was an irreplaceable experience; everyone should do it. It's more difficult if you have a disability, but it's so interesting to see how cultures differ."
Angela Finney, Access Abroad student to Spain
