Who are we?
This group is a national initiative to connect new Education Abroad Professionals to others in the field. "Newcomer" being defined as people who are new to international education, however anyone who identifies as a newcomer is welcome. This is not a group designed to help recent graduates break into the field but rather a group to help those already in the field grow into future leaders.

What are our goals?
The goals of the "Newcomers" include creating a network of colleagues in the field and professional development activities such as:

It is hoped that this group creates a sense of belonging for those entering the field and allows for a safe place for people to ask questions, consider educational opportunities, and discuss their future in the field.

How do I fit in?


  • Make contacts with others like yourself in the field.
  • Feel more connected to the education abroad community.
  • Gain a mentor!
  • Have discussions surrounding questions including:
    • What are my future opportunities in the field?
    • Should I get my Masters?
    • Should I get my PhD?
  • Identify other newcomers attending your next conference.
  • Find your next conference co-presenter(s).

How do I join?
If you would like to become a member of the "Newcomers Initiative" send an email to Bradley Titus include:

  • Your name
  • Professional Title, Organization

As a member, you:

  • Pay nothing
  • Join the Newcomers listserv
  • May request a mentor

What if I'm a student, recent graduate or job searching?
Though this group is not designed for you, we still like to assist you. Please feel free to use the resources on this website. There is valuable information related to the field of Education Abroad and how to establish your place within it.

If you are a student and looking for a mentor, please consider NAFSA's conference mentor program.

When you do enter the field, please be sure to join this initiative. We welcome you as a colleague and help you connect with a mentor.
