Getting Started

Ways to Arrange an Internship

Intern Abroad as Part of a Study Program

  • Gain professional experience while taking courses through a study program
  • Internships earn academic credit
  • Eligible for financial aid

Internship Placement Organizations

  • Focus your efforts on working in your field of study with the support of a program provider
  • May or may not be for academic credit (can also be incorporated into a directed study)
  • May or may not be eligible for financial aid (only if done for credit)

Independently Arranged Internships Abroad

  • Great option if you know of a particular business or organization you would like to work with
  • Usually less structure and support than other options
  • May or may not be for academic credit (can also be incorporated into a directed study)
  • May or may not be eligible for financial aid (only if done for credit)

Obtaining Credit for an Internship Experience

Students who want to receive academic credit for an internship abroad may be able to do so by completing a directed study. A directed study involves developing a research project with the guidance of faculty member who is responsible for assisting you with your project and issuing a final grade.

Talk with your college or major adviser for information about meeting academic internship requirements for your major through an internship abroad.

Health & Safety

Maintaining proper health insurance coverage while abroad is an important part of pre-departure planning. The University of Minnesota requires that all students participating in a work, intern, or volunteer program purchase CISI international health insurance through the Learning Abroad Center and that all students fill out and return a release and waiver form (OGC-SC246). See the Health and Safety section to find more information about these policies and to download the required forms.

Students who will be participating in a work, intern, or volunteer program after they graduate from the University of Minnesota may purchase a different type of international health insurance (ISIS), which also provides comprehensive coverage at an affordable price. See the Travel Products section for more information including rates, coverage, and an application form.
