“I learned everything about their market, and what’s really appropriate for them.”

—Emily R.

Emily spent a summer in Sydney, Australia, studying and interning with a local advertising agency. As an advertising major, she thought this was the perfect opportunity to combine practical experience in her field with a chance to see and experience Australian culture.

The summer internship program in Sydney consists of one course and an internship. Emily spent most of her time working for the small advertising agency she was paired with. “I did market research, I sold advertisements for a magazine, and I did data entry. It was absolutely wonderful. There were two owners of the company, and I worked closely with them. They were absolutely wonderful. I felt like I was an employee, just unpaid.”

Emily felt she gained a variety of skills from her experience, including better communication skills and skills in market research. Working the Australian context was also helpful for Emily’s understanding of her field. “Being in a different country, and experiencing how they do what they do, I think it was a different take on advertising. I learned everything about their market, and what’s really appropriate for them. They do a lot of print advertising, whereas we do a lot of television advertising, so I got more of that area.”

Emily’s experience in Sydney was all about balancing work and fun. Being there for just a summer, she felt that every day was an opportunity to experience something new. “On the weekends we traveled and explored. Sydney is such a big city, and so every weekend, every day, was an adventure. I got to see everything, went bungee jumping, scuba diving, everything. Every single day there was something going on. Work until 5, and then from 5 on, you were exploring. It wasn’t tiring. It should’ve been, but there was just so much to see that I think I was just so excited and so energetic about seeing it all. So, I just kept going somehow.” Summing up her experience, she said it was “absolutely wonderful. It’s definitely something you have to do.”
